Part 01

The Three Days Nobody Was Teaching

Antano Solar John flew to London to learn NLP from Richard Bandler. He stretched his finances to get there. He had just bought a house. The trip took everything he had.

For three days, Bandler sat at the front of the room and told stories. He did not draw on whiteboards. He did not explain techniques.

He just told stories and laughed. People in the room started getting restless. Some of them asked out loud: when does he start teaching?

Antano was not asking that question.

What happened in that room is what makes a difference between someone who learns a set of techniques and someone who leaves with a fundamentally different capability. Bandler was not withholding the teaching. The stories were the teaching.

The laughter was the teaching. The way he occupied the room, the way time seemed to move differently around him, the state he carried into every story. That was the content being transmitted.

Do you know sometimes when you're driving a vehicle, there is this, there's sometimes an emergency, and your brain just has to work very fast, and at that moment, it seems like the entire world has stopped, and you could literally see every detail, it's like as if time has just come to a standstill. Some of you may have experience with martial arts when you're doing it, and if you're trained intensively on martial arts, you might notice that when you are sparring, and when you're not sparring, time seems to move differently. I just want to give you an example of how if someone has access to some exclusive state, you could get access to it as well. See, I think a long time ago, when I went to Bandler, there was this moment where I was very, very stressed because I went there to learn NLP, right, because when I was in high school, I stumbled on this book called Frogs into Princess, and I really, really liked what I read, because it was the first psychology book that I read that had some how-to approach, right, like every other book was happy profiling people and saying this is this type of people, this is that type of people, but Frogs into Princess gave actionable steps, and I was very, very excited to go and experiment with my friends and see how it's helping them transform. So NLP was like of a great leverage to me because when I was closing deals, when I was in college, I would walk into a VP's office, and in my mind I would think, I would be analyzing, like after that conversation I would have a list of his values, I would have a list of his unconscious objections, so next time I go to meet him, I know I have everything packed like a story, a set of things that would get me a deal, and all that I learned from just reading books, so I thought, wow, if this is so amazing, I really want to learn neuro-linguistic programming, and I was like 22 at that time, and the course was in London, I had to sponsor myself, so I just bought a house, so I had to literally stretch my finances and take everything I have to go to the program, and I'm thinking I must learn from Richard everything that he has spoken about, and the first three days Richard is just there sitting and telling stories and stories and stories, and everybody is laughing and laughing and laughing, and some people are even going, when is he going to start teaching NLP? Thankfully I wasn't one of them, I think learning is about the ability to be fascinated, like when you are a small child, maybe it's that butterfly that went past you, or that surprise, and then you have this feeling of what's inside, and one thing that small children do very well is when they see something exciting, they are fascinated by it, and I think when you get fascinated, your neurology activates something, it produces some chemicals, it opens up the mirror neurons for you to actually start learning very differently in a variety of new ways, and I was fascinated and I was enjoying, I didn't take part in those conversations about when is he going to start teaching NLP and stuff like that, but a little part of me was also very stressed about how am I going to learn this, how am I going to remember this, right, so I remember, so to get, there are 300 people when Richard is teaching, and if you have to get access to the first row, you have to come like an hour early, so I do all that drill, I come an hour early and I'm sitting there and I'm watching him, and one of the things they taught you and I learned from the internet about NLP is this thing called mirroring, it's like if you want someone to really like you, you sit like them, move like them, which is the most dumbest instruction I think, not at the surface level, you see there's a difference between imitating somebody and becoming somebody, right, you could have someone's voice but you may not have their soul, and there's a huge difference, but I didn't know that at that time, but I was still mirroring Richard, and I had this, I was trying to mirror Richard, and I had this headache, so I went and I told Richard, it was the break, and I told Richard, I told Richard, Richard, you know what, the thing is I'm having this headache and I've just been trying to mirror you, and I don't know if someone says that to me right now, I wouldn't take it as a compliment, but Richard made me sit next to him, and he said something like, he didn't say anything, actually he ignored that I existed, and he started talking to, or at least he acted like he did, and he started speaking to the people in front, and there was somebody who came and asked him some question, and he spoke to him about how Richard came to India once, and he met this guru who had access to some very, very powerful states of mind, and he told the guru, could you please teach me how to do this, the guru said, no, no, you need 20 years of practice, go away, so Richard said, he asked the guru if he could just show him and go there once, so he saw the guru close his eyes and go into a nice altered state, and Richard said, he started to breathe exactly the way the guru was breathing, you know, from the stomach, and when he went in, he went in, and when he breathed out, Richard copied that exact thing, and he said, as he was doing that, he found himself going into the same altered state, the interesting thing was when Richard was telling the story to the person in front, I noticed that suddenly I was able to see the entire room all at once, and I was able to see minor movements in people when they're breathing in, when they're breathing out, my ears kind of opened so loud that I could hear whispers from far away distinctively, and at the same time, I felt relaxation like someone was massaging my forehead and the pain was subsiding, it is such an amazing state, and Richard turns, he looks at me and he says, this is how you learn everything that is going on here, and from that day, I've been a collector of states, whenever I find someone in an exquisite state, I'm like, I want to experience what that is like, you know, we all go into trance in and out, like a cricketer for example, when they're batting a ball, they see the ball move slower than it actually does, and not only does the ball move slower in their perception, it's also magnified, so they can see a spin that a normal person would probably miss. With more precision. With more precision, we all hallucinate, I mean snipers, you know, when they're trained for sniping, they're asked to meditate for like 30 minutes, the purpose of that is because when they're actually shooting, they don't see the target the way it is, they see it mentally, they see the target much closer, good golf players do that, they don't see the target there, they see it much closer, mentally they're seeing it like they're hitting from here to there, but behaviorally translates from here to the far place, so there are wonderful states of mind and people do extraordinary things all the time, that the human mind can work in so many different ways, but the interesting thing is after that experience I've met several artists who naturally do that, when they work on their art, there's a person in this room who's capable of doing that, how do I know it, because when I'm telling the story, I'm looking at a goal, obviously, okay, so good artists when they do their drawing, they see it as a 3D projection, some of them see it as a 3D projection automatically, so you see a lot of times geniuses when they do what they do, it's not only about what they know, it's also the exquisite states of altered states that they can go in and out so effortlessly and so easily, I mean think about this, a good pianist, right, hears about 15 different notes within a second, they're mentally capable of splitting one second into 15 parts, when they are performing, they're not in the same state of consciousness as they are when they're having a conversation with you, when they're performing, they go into a different state of altered reality, where the relationship with time is completely different, and if you want to learn that, you have to go back to the basics of how you learned everything you have been doing as a child, you know the best type of learning is the kinds that you have taken for granted, like walking and talking, we don't, when we talk about learning, we don't think of them as learned process, because it happens so naturally, and unconscious assimilation gives you this ability to learn the things you want to learn so naturally, .
