Flow State on Demand: What Time Distortion Does to Performance
Time distortion is the perceptual state where elapsed time appears to compress or expand, giving elite performers like cricketers, surgeons, and snipers a decisive edge over those operating in ordinary time perception. This state is not a rare accident or a byproduct of years of training alone. Through NLP mirroring, a person can acquire that same time-distorted state by mirroring someone who already runs it consistently.

Part 01
What Time Distortion Means and Where It Shows Up
A professional cricketer waits at the crease for a ball bowled at 140 kilometers per hour. To a spectator in the stands, that ball is nearly invisible. To the batter, it arrives slower.
Not because the physics changed. Because the batter's state of mind changed how fast they process incoming information relative to the speed of the event.
Time distortion psychology describes this precisely: time distortion is the phenomenon where perceived duration of an event differs significantly from clock time. The event itself takes the same amount of real time. The person experiencing it processes it at a different rate.
Time distortion examples appear across high-stakes domains. A martial artist in full sparring sees a punch coming with what feels like room to respond. Someone who has been in a serious accident reports that everything slowed to a near stop in the seconds before impact.
A bike racer going at speed perceives surrounding traffic as stationary. None of these people stopped time. They entered a state that altered their rate of perception relative to incoming events.
Snipers provide one of the clearest illustrations. Sniping at operational distance requires compensating for humidity, wind speed, and target movement simultaneously, at the moment of pulling the trigger. The calculation cannot be fully conscious.
The sniper has to enter a meditative state where the computation happens below the level of deliberate thought. Military sniper training includes meditation training precisely because the altered state is not incidental. It is part of the technical requirement of the job.
Part 02
How Mirroring Transfers a State, Not Just a Posture
NLP mirroring is commonly understood as physical matching. When one person mirrors another, they adopt a similar posture, movement pace, and orientation. This is the visible layer of what happens. What goes unobserved is the internal layer.
When you mirror someone, you do not only replicate their external appearance. You also pick up their state of mind. The physical mirroring and the internal state are not separate.
The body and the state run together. If the person being mirrored is in a time-distorted state at the moment of mirroring, the person doing the mirroring enters that same state.
This is a verifiable shift, not a conceptual one. It changes how fast incoming information registers. It changes the subjective sense of how much time is available to respond.
A person who enters this state in the presence of someone who runs it consistently begins to perceive time differently within that interaction.
The implication for skill acquisition is significant. A young cricketer working to develop time distortion as part of their batting skill does not have to wait for the state to arrive through accumulated years of practice. Being in the physical presence of a senior cricketer who already runs that state, and mirroring that person with precision, creates access to the state directly.
The pattern, as a circuit. One trigger, and it runs the full loop on its own. A pattern runs from one source. That is why it returns no matter how much effort goes in at the surface.
Part 03
What This Means for How Performance Gets Built
The distinction
Performance coaching addresses the technical layer: how to grip the bat, how to position the feet, how to read the game. This is necessary. It is not sufficient.
The internal state is a component of the performance. A cricketer with perfect technique who does not run a time-distorted state when facing a fast bowler is functionally less skilled than a cricketer with slightly less refined technique who does run it. The state determines how much of the available skill can be accessed at the moment it is needed.
Antano Solar John, one of the Personal Evolution Scientists behind Excellence Installation Technology, demonstrates this directly. When he is in a time-distorted state and someone mirrors him, that person enters the same state. This is not a demonstration of a concept. It is the state being transferred in real time.
The significance for anyone developing elite capability in a demanding domain is this: identifying the specific internal state that the best performers in that domain access, and then finding a way to acquire that state, is as important as the technical training. The internal performance state is not a bonus that arrives after enough repetitions. It is a skill that can be installed, and it can be installed faster through proximity and mirroring than through accumulated experience alone. If you want to understand how this applies to your own capability development, the free masterclass covers the underlying principles in full.

Surface work bounces. Advice, effort and willpower operate at the level of conscious thought, so they bounce off. The pattern runs one level below. Change it there, and the old loop has nothing left to run on.A × T = C™. Antano and Harini's formula: Adjustment times Time equals Consequences. Effort on the wrong adjustment barely moves the needle in decades. The right adjustment, made once at the source, compounds for years.

Time DistortionA shift in time perception where a person processes incoming events faster than average, causing those events to appear to move more slowly. Experienced by elite performers under high-demand conditions and accessible through specific states.
NLP MirroringThe practice of physically matching another person's posture, movement, and pace. In addition to the visible alignment, mirroring also transfers the internal state of the person being mirrored.
Performance StateThe specific internal configuration a person operates from during a demanding task. The performance state determines how much of a person's technical skill is accessible at the moment of execution.
State TransferThe process by which one person's internal state is acquired by another through physical proximity and mirroring. The state being transferred is not taught through instruction; it is transmitted through the body.
Questions people ask
What does time distortion mean in psychology?
Time distortion in psychology refers to a measurable discrepancy between perceived duration and actual clock time. A person in a time-distorted state processes incoming information faster than normal, which causes fast-moving events to appear slower. This phenomenon appears in near-death experiences, in flow states, and consistently in elite performers under high-demand conditions.
What are common time distortion examples?
A professional cricketer perceiving a fast ball as arriving more slowly than spectators see it. A martial artist who sees a punch coming with what feels like extra time to respond. A person in a vehicle accident who reports the seconds before impact feeling like minutes. A competitive bike racer who perceives surrounding traffic as nearly stationary. In each case, the person's rate of perception has shifted relative to the speed of the external event.
Can time distortion be learned or is it only available to elite athletes?
Time distortion is a state, not a personality trait or an exclusive capability of certain individuals. Any person who already runs this state can transfer it to another person through mirroring. When someone mirrors a person in a time-distorted state, they enter that same state. This means access to time distortion is not limited to those who develop it through years of specialized training.
How does mirroring produce a state change rather than just copying posture?
Physical posture and internal state are not separate systems. When a person mirrors another person's physical position, pace, and movement, the body begins to run the same internal configuration as the person being mirrored. The state follows the body. If the person being mirrored is in a time-distorted state, the mirror enters that state as well. The mechanism is not metaphorical. It produces a real and verifiable shift in perception.
What is the role of the internal state in performance development?
Technical skill and internal state are two separate tracks of development. A performer with strong technical skill who does not access the right internal state during execution operates below their actual capability. The state determines how much of the available skill is accessible at the moment of performance. Building the state alongside technical skill, rather than assuming it arrives through repetition alone, accelerates the development of genuine elite performance.

So when you mirror me, what also happens is you also pick up my state of mind. Okay, so see, time distortion is the phenomenon where something happened appears to go slower than it actually is, or something happens to go faster than it actually is. Like in a martial artist, when they're sparing, they, it, when someone is about to punch them, for them it feels like there's a lot of time in between the punch. Like a professional cricketer, when they're waiting for the ball to come. For you and me, it might appear to come like this, but for them it appears to come a little slower than it actually, it feels to people around. Some people might have a near-death experience during an accident, you know, like, like there's an accident about to take place, and suddenly you feel like as if the entire world has stopped. Some people can do that on demand, like I was a bike racer once, so I would go on these races and it would be like as if every other vehicle has literally stopped. It doesn't mean they have stopped, it's just that you're processing things faster. Now when you mirror somebody, you also pick up their state of mind. So if I'm in a time-distorted state when you mirror me, you also get into a time-distorted state. Does it make sense? So now let's say you want to become a cricketer. Then in addition to getting the skills of batting and bowling, you also, and the posture and the techniques, you also want the skill where the ball is appearing to come slower at you than it appears to other people. So a lot of the performance game is internal. Like, the state of mind determines how well you perform. Now a surgeon has a very different altered state of mind than a cricketer would, or, you know, when snipers go on the field. By the way, sniping is not as simple as there's a target and you get the angle right and fire. Because when you're sniping, you're actually compensating for the humidity, the wind speed. At the end of the day, it's a projectile that's very lightweight and there will be variations at where it's going to land. But a sniper has to compensate for all of that intuitively at that moment where he or she's pulling the trigger. So most snipers, what happens is they go into a meditative state. In fact, a lot of sniper training, even in the military, they teach meditation before sniping, before teaching them to use a sniper. Because what happens for most people is they get into an altered state where the target appears much closer than it actually is. And when they're aiming, they're just calculating something nearby, but automatically that's translating to the real distance. The calculations are automatically getting translated to the real distance. Now imagine if someone tries to learn the art of using a sniper rifle, but never gets this altered state. For most people, getting these altered states takes decades. If you're a martial artist, you train for 10 years, maybe you will learn time distortion. But then I think the other way to learn is you get the state first by mirroring, and then learning the other components becomes much more easier. So this is why mirroring is not only about influencing people, but mirroring is also about accelerated learning. It actually allows you to pick up the states in which you can do things which otherwise would be impossible to do. When I first went to learn NLP from Richard Bandler, there were about 300 people in the room, and I used to obsessively and compulsively practice everything he was asking me to do. And one day, you had to come one hour early if you had to get the first throw. So I one day go really early, and I sit in the first seat. I was, I think, a kid then. I was like 23 or something, 22. And all I was thinking of, I've taken all my savings. You know, it was, I don't know, I think it costed me like eight or nine lakhs for the travel stay. It was in London, and I just recently bought a house. Whatever I had, I had to put it on that program. And it was not even my career. I'd just come there for time pass, right, because I'm a technology guy. And I'm like, okay, I've invested all of this in here. This Bandler is just, you know, he's telling these stories, and I'm learning something, but let me get the most of it. So I'm going to, and the other fear was after 60s, he's going to be gone. So I was like, let me get the most from Bandler. And I'm sitting in the front, and I'm like, and I developed this headache. God, it was terrible. So it was break, and then I go, and there's a long line to talk to Bandler, and I stand there, and finally it's my turn to ask him a question. So I say, Bandler, I have a headache. I've just been trying to mirror you. So there was an empty chair. Bandler said, sit down here. I sat. I thought he was going to work on me, and I was very excited. He ignored, and he started talking to the person in front. And as he was talking, he started speaking about a story of his trip to India. And he said about how once when he came to India, he met this, a guru who was able to go into a very nice, powerful, altered state. And he told the guru, teach me how you do this. And the guru said, no, no, it's going to take you 10 years of discipline, and you have to be my disciple before you can learn to do this. And Bandler said, OK, can you just go in there and show me once? And Bandler said that as soon as the guru went into that altered state, Bandler started to breathe exactly the same way the guru was breathing at that point in time. And he said, as he started to do that, in an instant, he felt his consciousness changing. And he was aware of a lot of things, and he went into a powerful state of mind himself. The interesting thing is when Bandler was telling the story to the person he was talking to, I started to feel a sense of comfort in my body. My head began to relax, and I started to feel less pain. And I started to breathe in differently. And in a moment, it appeared as if I could see everybody in the room at the same time. The sounds of people speaking from far were more louder and distinctive and clearer. And at the same time, I was totally relaxed. It was as if in this moment, I'm totally alert and relaxed at the same time. And as I was enjoying this experience, Bandler turns, looks at me, and he says, this is how you learn everything that is going on here by starting from a very resourceful state. Ever since I've been a kineser of states, every time I see someone do something extraordinary, I would mirror them and collect their state. And I would like, OK, this is a nice addition.
