How to Identify the Natural Leverage That Works With Your Children
A couple brought their child to Antano Solar John, convinced the child had ADD and OCD. After working with the parents instead, the child's behaviour changed entirely. The natural leverage parents hold with their children is already there from birth, and the common mistake is replacing it with strategies borrowed from corporate leadership or coaching frameworks.

The things to take from this
001Children are wired to follow parents in the early years
From birth through the first eight years, children are naturally oriented toward their parents. No sophisticated strategy is required. When a parent says 'have your breakfast' with genuine expectation, the child responds. This baseline of trust and compliance is the original leverage, and it holds for decades when left intact.
002Borrowed frameworks break what already works
Parents who bring corporate leadership techniques or coaching models into the home often find their children become more resistant, not less. The relationship dynamic shifts from a natural one to a managed one. Children sense the change in framing and respond differently. The tools that work in boardrooms frequently backfire at dinner tables.
003The child's behaviour is often a reflection of the parent's state
When a child presents with persistent behavioural patterns, the first place to look is the parent's own responses and internal state. In documented cases, when parents adjusted how they showed up, the child's diagnosed symptoms reduced significantly. The child is often mirroring what the parent is producing in the environment around them.
004Leverage is available at every stage of life when you know where to look
What motivates a person to act is always present. A 75-year-old with no energy finds it the moment a family wedding is announced six months away. Children are no different. When the parenting influence is aligned with what the child genuinely responds to, effort becomes unnecessary and natural compliance returns.
Part 01
The Parenting Influences That Were Already Working
A parent in their late thirties sat in a session with Antano Solar John, describing years of struggle with their child. Behavioural issues at school. Resistance at home.
A diagnosis of ADD and OCD from the child's physician. The parent arrived expecting a strategy for the child. What they received instead was a mirror held up to their own parenting.
The session did not address the child directly. It addressed the parents. Within weeks, the child's responses shifted.
The diagnosis did not disappear overnight, but the patterns the parents had been reinforcing did. This is not a rare case. It is a repeating one, and it points to something specific about how parenting influences actually operate.
Children from birth through roughly eight years of age carry a natural orientation toward their parents. No manufacturing is required. The parent says to have breakfast, and the child has breakfast.
The parent says to get dressed, and the child gets dressed. Not because of a technique or a framework, but because the relationship carries that weight. The child is wired to take direction from the parent.
That wiring is the leverage, and it does not require activation. It only requires the parent not to deactivate it.
When parents discover this, there is usually a pause. They have been reading books, attending seminars, trying approaches. The approaches are not wrong in isolation.
The problem is importing them into a context where the natural structure was already functioning. The moment a parent begins treating their child like a corporate direct report or a coaching client, the relationship changes in ways the parent does not intend. The child registers the shift and responds to it.
Part 02
What Backfires: Applying the Wrong Framework at Home
A senior leader at a manufacturing company spent three years learning a particular leadership model. He applied it across his team with visible results. His team responded well to structured accountability, clear performance metrics, and weekly reviews.
Encouraged by this, he brought the same model home. His fourteen-year-old began to withdraw. His ten-year-old became anxious before meals because the father had started framing dinner as a debrief session.
This pattern is not unusual among high-performing parents. The more effective a person is in a professional context, the more they trust the frameworks that delivered that effectiveness. The reasoning seems sound: if it works with thirty adults in an organisation, it should work with two children in a home.
What this reasoning misses is that the relationship substrate is entirely different. An employee enters the relationship with an explicit agreement about roles, responsibilities, and outcomes. A child does not.
A child enters the relationship with trust and a biological orientation toward the parent. That orientation is not maintained by systems. It is maintained by the quality of the connection itself.
Coaching models present a parallel problem. Parents who attend personal development programmes often return home with new vocabulary and new questions. They begin asking their children questions designed to produce insight: what do you want, what is stopping you, what would it look like if you succeeded.
These questions are not harmful in the right context. In the context of a child who simply wants to feel close to their parent, they create distance. The child does not want to be coached. The child wants the parent to be present.
The highly effective parenting influences are the ones that feel like nothing. They do not feel like interventions. They feel like a parent being a parent.
When that naturalness is replaced with technique, the child's behaviour shifts to accommodate the new dynamic, and not always in the direction the parent intended. Identifying leverage with children begins with removing the layers that were never needed in the first place.
The pattern, as a circuit. One trigger, and it runs the full loop on its own. A pattern runs from one source. That is why it returns no matter how much effort goes in at the surface.
Part 03
How Leverage With Children Is Identified and Restored
The distinction
Antano Solar John draws a direct line between the concept of leverage and human motivation at every age. A person in their seventies with no energy finds it the moment someone announces a family wedding six months out. The body organises itself around a reason to act.
Children function identically, with one important difference: at a young age, the parent is itself the reason. The child does not need an external event to generate motivation. The parent is the event.
This means the identification of leverage with children is less about discovering what the child wants and more about restoring the relational quality that already activates the child's natural responsiveness. When a parent consistently approached their child with the presupposition that the child would not cooperate, the child detected that presupposition and responded to it.
When the parent shifted to a genuine expectation of cooperation, the child's behaviour changed without any direct intervention on the child's behaviour.
This is what makes the case of the child diagnosed with ADD and OCD instructive. The child was not changed. The parents changed.
The environment the child was living inside changed. The child's responses then reorganised around the new environment. This is not a one-off outcome.
It is a repeatable result when the correct variable is addressed. The correct variable is almost always the parent, not the child.
Restoring leverage does not require a dramatic shift in the parent's approach. It requires removing what was added on top of a working foundation. The parenting influences that work are quiet ones.
They are built on eight years or more of a parent saying something and meaning it without doubt. They are built on the child's experience of the parent as a source of direction rather than a source of negotiation. When that foundation is intact, leverage is not something to identify.
It is already operating, and the parent's role is simply to stay inside it rather than replace it with something borrowed from a different context.

Surface work bounces. Advice, effort and willpower operate at the level of conscious thought, so they bounce off. The pattern runs one level below. Change it there, and the old loop has nothing left to run on.A × T = C™. Antano and Harini's formula: Adjustment times Time equals Consequences. Effort on the wrong adjustment barely moves the needle in decades. The right adjustment, made once at the source, compounds for years.

LeverageThe natural point of motivation that produces voluntary action in a person. With children, this is often the relationship with the parent itself rather than any external reward or incentive.
Parenting InfluenceThe way a parent's state, expectations, and relational quality shape a child's behaviour over time, operating below the level of explicit instruction or technique.
PresuppositionThe underlying assumption a parent holds when interacting with a child. A parent who presupposes non-compliance produces a different child response than one who presupposes cooperation, independent of the words used.
Relational SubstrateThe foundational quality of connection between a parent and child that determines how all communication and direction lands. Techniques applied without this substrate in place tend to produce unintended results.
Questions people ask
What are the parenting influences that have the many impact on a child's behaviour?
The significant parenting influences are not strategies or techniques. They are the parent's own state, expectations, and the quality of the relationship built over the early years. A parent who has spent the first eight years of a child's life giving direction with genuine expectation of cooperation will find that the child responds to direction well into adulthood. The relationship itself is the leverage.
Why do children stop responding to their parents over time?
Children do not stop responding to parents without cause. The relationship changes when the parent introduces a new framework that shifts the dynamic from a natural one to a managed one. This happens when parents bring corporate leadership models or coaching techniques home. The child registers the change in how the parent is relating and responds to the new dynamic rather than the content of what is being said.
Can a child's diagnosed behavioural condition like ADD or OCD be influenced by parenting?
In documented cases, children presenting with ADD and OCD behaviours showed significant change when the parents adjusted their own approach and internal state, without any direct intervention on the child. This does not mean diagnosis is incorrect, but it does indicate that the environment the parent creates around the child plays a substantial role in how those patterns express. The child is highly responsive to the quality of the parenting environment.
How do I identify what my child actually responds to?
The starting point is not the child. It is the parent's own presuppositions. If a parent approaches a request with a genuine expectation that the child will comply, and the relationship has a history of cooperation, the child will respond. If the parent carries doubt or uses strategies designed to manage non-compliance, the child reads that and responds to it. Identifying what works begins with the parent examining what they are actually expecting before they speak.
Is it too late to restore natural connection with an older child?
Leverage operates at every age. Adults in their seventies reorganise their entire energy and purpose around a single event that matters to them. Older children and teenagers are not different in this respect. The restoration of a natural connection with an older child begins with the parent removing the frameworks and strategies that replaced the original relationship and returning to a quality of presence that is not managed or strategic. This takes time, but the child's responsiveness does return when the parent's quality changes.

Leverage even works in dead bed. I've seen people who are 70, 75, and then they have no purpose in life. And suddenly, you say, OK, next six months, somebody is getting married in the family or something. And then I don't know where they get their energy from, man. They just get up. Leverage works everywhere. I don't know if this is true, but there was a joke going around earlier that one guy was lying down and he was sick. And he's an alcoholic. So when he was sick, they kept the whiskey bottle right there in front of his eyes. And they said that he actually recovered four times faster, because every day he was thinking that if he gets better, he can actually go back to his alcohol. Leverage works. You'll be surprised what people will do, to what extent they would go when they're actually motivated to get something. How does it work? How do you identify leverage with children? Children want to be happy all the time. You know, the best part about children is you don't need leverage. That's what I love about children, is the relationship. See, at a very young age, the relationship that they share with their parents, the parent says, do this, they do it. And then that continues until the parent messes it up. OK, so often you find people who take what they learn in coaching and going to the children and saying, I don't want to influence my child. Or sometimes they learn corporate leadership, and then they take that back home. And it becomes a mess over there. So if the relationship with the parent and the child has been in a particular way, then they're just habituated to listening. If the first eight years, there is this relationship where, hey, why don't you have your breakfast, and the child has the breakfast? Not with the presupposition that the child won't. If that is set on for eight years, you'll kind of find that going on even when they're 40. In fact, for some people, it works of negative, and we have to help them break out of that pattern. But most times, that's the beautiful thing about children. In fact, it's very interesting, because there are sometimes parents who have brought to me children who they say are having ADD problems and OCD and compulsive nature. For one particular couple, the child was perfectly fine. I had to just change the parenting for them to have a different response from the child. So the guy would actually, so this is about two years ago. The mother, father, and the son had come. The son would just throw tantrums, tear things, break things down. And I don't remember how old he was. He was this height. And I just told the father, hold him firmly. And the father couldn't do that. I said, no, you've got to hold him firmly. And the father held him firmly, and the child would kick the face, do this, do that. I said, continue holding him firmly. Now what happened was the tug went on for like 30 minutes. It went on for 45 minutes. After 45 minutes, the child just sat there in the lap being attentive to what is going on. He didn't need therapy. He didn't need medication to do that. He just needed the parents to be firm in a particular way. And the interesting thing is that this guy had parents who had abused him. Not abused, but beat him up and stuff like that. So he grew up with this thought, I shouldn't treat my children like that. And he was overcompensating. But I think if you can, for me, that was beautiful to watch, because everything looks like the child guy won't listen. That is an emotional regret that he'll break things. But it just took 30, 40 minutes of holding a person firmly in place for him to have a completely new behavior. But if that happens for the first few years, then after that what happens is there is a relationship. And I think that's the meaning of a relationship, is that you don't need leverage. Like people who love me, I don't need leverage for them to do what I would need. And people who trust me, I don't need leverage for me to get them to do things that they have to do. So I think with parenting, you've got to focus more on the relationship. Often a house becomes like a corporate. I've really seen families where they're trying to take leadership policies of how to delegate work and how to motivate team. And they try and apply the same thing at home. And it's a nightmare, because the presuppositions in a corporate is designed to help someone perform, not help someone evolve. You take that and you apply it in a different context. It doesn't work at all. But leverage for children can be several other things. Outside of parenting, leverage can be several other things. Because leverage is social acceptance. Kids do most of what they do because they want to be accepted socially by people they see as cool. So what else are leverage for children? I think for a lot of people it is social influence. I think career is a strong influence. So when you and I think about career, we're thinking engineer, doctor. They might be looking at an actress and thinking I have to become like her. Or an actor. Or a sportsman. So career, career, social influence. And then, and surprising though, parents are a fantastic leverage. In most cases, the child cares, really cares about how their parents feel. They may not show it that way, but sometimes the parent just expressing what they feel can have a turnaround in the child.
